🇧🇷 Boquim is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Sergipe. Its area is 215 km².
It is located in the South Coast region of the state, and is known for being the "Land of Orange".
History According to popular stories, about 10 km from the current city of Boquim, Colonel José Batista founded the village of Lagoa Vermelha in the first half of the 19th century; and in 1857 it was elevated to the village of Lagoa Vermelha by means of provincial law, with headquarters in the old village.
However, the locality went through several complications that harmed its inhabitants; such as outbreaks of diseases that affected the place in winter and the frequent floods of the Piauí River.
In 1869 the locality was even isolated for several days.
Faced with this, Father Manoel Nogueira Cravo, vicar of Lagoa Vermelha, as well as Antônio Manoel da Fraga and the greatest Venancio Fernandes fought for the transfer of the headquarters to a nearby locality, called "Boquinha da Mata" (nicknamed "Boquim"), whose lands were donated by Antônio Araújo.
On March 21, 1870, through Provincial Law No. 836, the village headquarters of Lagoa Vermelha was transferred to the village of Boquim.
On October 16, 1926, it was elevated to the category of municipality of Boquim, by state law No. 959. Buquim had its spelling changed to Boquim by state decree No. 3334 of January 27, 1976.
The Forest Fountain The Fonte da Mata marks an important chapter in the history of Boquim, because the origin of the name of the Municipality comes from it. Known in the colonial period as "Boquinha da Mata" had its name misrepresented by the caboclo to "Boquim", hence the popular name of the parish. Photos and History of Fonte da Mata
