🇧🇷 Senhor do Bonfim is a municipality in the state of Bahia in the North-East region of Brazil. EC Ipatinga de Bahia is the local association football team.

The municipality has a strong tradition of June festivals and is considered the Bahian capital of forró.

History The history of the formation of Senhor do Bonfim is directly related to the search for gold and precious stones and the introduction of cattle breeding in the Bahian hinterland. At the end of the 16th century, the Portuguese belonging to Casa da Torre organized expeditions to the São Francisco River and the Jacobina gold mines, starting the occupation of the interior of the province and the formation of communication routes with the coast.

Located in the passage zone of these expeditions, a ranch of tropeiros was established in the territory of the current municipality in the 17th century, serving as a landing for cowboys, bandeirantes and pathfinders who transited in that region. At the same time, within the strategy of catechesis of the indigenous populations, the camp of the Sahy Mission was created from 1697, directed by the Order of Friars Minor or Order of Franciscan Fathers. In Arraial, established near a pataxó village, convent and church were built under the invocation of Nossa Senhora das Neves. In 1720, the Sahy camp passed to the category of Vila, hosting the comarca de Jacobina until 1724, when the headquarters was transferred to the Vila of the same name.

With the growth of livestock activity, the expansion of pastures and the consequent advance of the occupation of the Bahian hinterland, a village was formed around the old ranch, on the banks of the Boiadas road. In 1750, the nucleus had several buildings and with an established population, receiving the name of arraial of Senhor do Bonfim da Tapera.

Arraial, in addition to being a route for penetration into the territory, stood out as an important nucleus, developing based on activities related to cattle breeding. The mineral riches of the Region, in addition to the privileged location of Arraial, attract a large number of tropeiros, adventurers and pedestrians from other parts of Bahia and the Northeast, hindering control and order in the locality. The municipality created in 1776 by virtue of the Royal Charter, to solve the constant problems that arose in 1799 with the local population that reached 600 people, requested the government of the Province to create the Village, a request that was met in the same year with the installation of Vila Nova da Rainha on October 1.

In 1885 the village was elevated to the category of city, becoming called Senhor do Bonfim.

Geography The city is located at the southern foot of the Serra do Gado Bravo, extension of the Chapada Diamantina, in the Espinhaço Mountain Range. Its altitude, in the central region of the city, is 453 meters above sea level, but has locations in the extension of the municipality with an altitude of more than 600 meters. Because it has a privileged location, it is always green in all months of the year, always stocked with fruits and vegetables from the region called "Grota", in the valleys of the mountain range.

In its domains there are several river springs, all belonging to the Itapicuru River basin. There are several dams in the municipality, such as the Sohen Dam, Quiçé Dam, Boa Vista Dam, which help to reduce the lack of water in times of drought. These dams dam streams also belonging to the Itapicuru River basin.

In the area of the municipality it is possible to observe various types of vegetation, from the dense mountain forest, remnant of the Atlantic Mata, to the caatinga, being a perfect observatory for those who want to contemplate or study the aspects of the vegetation cover of the Brazilian Northeast.
