🇫🇷 Varois-et-Chaignot is a commune in the Côte-d'Or department in eastern France.

Varois-et-Chaignot is a rural municipality, because it is one of the low or very dense municipalities, within the meaning of the communal density grid of INSEE.

In addition, the municipality is part of the area of attraction of Dijon.

The land use of the municipality, is marked by the importance of agricultural territories (90.3% in 2018), nevertheless decreasing compared to 1990 (93.8%). The detailed distribution in 2018 is as follows: arable land (90.3%), urbanized areas (9.7%), forests (0.1%).

**Fort de Varois ** Fort Varois is part of the defensive complex around Dijon established for the defense of the eastern border in the 1870s.

It affects the shape of an "equilateral trapeze", delimited by ditches and fortifications. All constructions are covered with plant earth. 
It was first occupied by the garrison of the 27th Infantry Regiment, then, on the occasion of the two world wars, as a prisoner's camp. Downgraded in 1954, handed over to Les Domaines, converted into a youth hostel, it was acquired in 1972 by the city of Dijon, made available at Air Base 102 between 1982 and 1985, then sold to a private owner, Mr. Jean-Pierre Coron.

It occupies an area of 9.87 hectares, including about 3,000 m² of living space, in two buildings, on three levels, corresponding to barracks, defences, batteries, powder chambers. Captions, casemates, ditches and defences represent the rest of the built area.

Fort Varois is included in the additional inventory of historical monuments on April 11, 2007.
