José Brugo belonged to the trade of Paraná and were linked to navigation with river transport.

The fields that were colonized initially belonged to Vicente del Castillo, who was Minister of Finance of the Argentine Confederation; in the twilight of the Confederation he lent money to the state to cover the expenses of the squad stranded in the port of Paraná and with the transfer of the capital to Buenos AiresBartolomé Mitre did not recognize the contribution and was in serious economic difficulties, so he These fields passed into the hands of the Pro Templo Commission of San Miguel de Paraná, following a decree by Governor Febre in June 1878. This commission ceded its rights to Nicolás Arriola and then to the Brugo brothers.

Carlos and J. José Brugo started what they called Colonia 3 de Febrero, adjacent to the ejido of Paraná, with a boundary in the Las Tunas stream; they populated with about 120 Friulian families all the farms that had 20 square blocks. From 1887, with the donation by Juan Bautista Solaro of several blocks of land for the construction of the Catholic Church, a certain population began to be generated around the new chapel in concession No. 11 and that gave rise to what the priest Benedicto Garabaso decided to call San Benito. Despite the fact that for many years it continued to be called Colonia 3 de Febrero, and in the popular way Colonia Brugo, in time the name that is known today prevailed: San Benito, whose ejido has about 5400 hectares.
