Geography: Location Châteaugay is located at the end of a volcanic basaltic plateau (the Lachaud plateau, from the Puys chain) that dominates the Limagne plain.

History The history of the municipality is closely linked to the history of the Châteaugay castle.

Of a rural character and winemaker throughout the first half of the 20th century, the village gradually became a residential municipality with the realization of a large number of individual constructions. Two craft and commercial areas, one in the village, the other on the edge of National Road 9 (currently departmental 2009), complete the local economic fabric.

During the revolutionary period of the National Convention (1792-1795), the municipality bore the name Bel-Air.

Places and monuments • Châteaugay Castle; built on the site of the 11th century Vigoche castle. The lords of Vigoche were mentioned in the middle of the 13th century. The castle and the seigneury were acquired by the sires of Giac in the middle of the 14th century. In 1381, Pierre II de Giac, Chancellor of the Duke of Berry and future Chancellor of France, had the building he named Château-Gay rebuilt.

It originally included a central building and two watchtowers, to which were added two towers fifty years later, then in the 15th century and the Renaissance various extensions and decorations, including a superb stone door in the inner courtyard. The castle, from which you have a striking view of the Limagne, the Forez mountains, and the Puys chain, is open to visit. Its square dungeon of the 14th century remained intact. • The vineyard; in 1809 when Napoleon I had the first cadastre established, the entire hillside exposed to the south and east on the edge of the Limagne plain was covered with vines. The Châteaugay vineyard (gamay and chardonnay; rediscovery of black damask or syrah of Auvergne) has been spreading on its slopes since the 18th century, and produces an AOC wine, Chateaugay. • Rue des Caves; it is lined with cellars dug directly into the perite, by prisoners at the time of Napoleon I. • The new church; this church, which had not been used for worship for a long time, was desecrated on June 1, 1981 by the Bishop of Clermont-Ferrand Jean Dardel48. • A school built in the 1970s with interesting shapes.
