🇧🇷 Barra do Piraí is a municipality of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Its area is 578.471 km². It is 114 km from Rio de Janeiro.

The municipality contains part of the 5,952 hectares (14,710 acres) Serra da Concórdia State Park, created in 2002.

History The first known inhabitants of the region of the current municipality of Barra do Piraí were the xumetos, pitas and araris Indians, also called crowned. During the gold cycle in Minas Gerais and Goiás, in the 18th century, several trails of mule troops crossed the region of the current municipality, taking gold to the coast and supplies to the mines

The settlement of Portuguese origin of Barra do Piraí began in desesmarias lands donated in 1761 and 1765 to Antônio Pinto de Miranda and Francisco Pernes Lisboa. With an area of one league in a block, they were located on the right and left banks of the Piraí River, at its confluence with Paraíba do Sul. The first colonizers were members of the Faro and Pereira da Silva families. Great slave masters, they dedicated themselves to agriculture and, in a short time, dominated the coffee region, saw above.

In 1853, the primitive sesmarias were interconnected by the bridge that Commander Gonçalves Morais had built. Near her, the Hotel Piraí stood up and, later, new buildings. At that time, on the opposite bank of Paraíba, the commanders João Pereira da Silva and José Pereira de Faro, future baron of Rio Bonito, erected the small village of Santana.

The rapid development of the place, where large commercial transactions were carried out, led to the inauguration of a station of the Central Railway of Brazil on August 7, 1864. Then, the construction of the ramaismineiro and paulista began.

Barra do Piraí was the first emancipated city in the republican regime. His emancipation took place on March 10, 1890 and his emancipator was José Pereira de Faro, the third Baron of Rio Bonito.

Transport: Rail Barra do Piraí is proud to have been the largest railway junction in Latin America, giving access to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte. Two important railway lines passed through their lands: the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil and the Rede Mineira de Viação.

This junction is formed today by the following railways: Linha do Centro (direction Minas Gerais) and Ramal de São Paulo (direction São Paulo), both belonging to the old Central Railroad of Brazil.

For many years, at this junction was the terminal tip of the Barra da Rede Mineira de Viação Line, which went to the south of Minas Gerais, passing through the district of Conservatória, in the city near Valença.

Currently, the railway network is a concession of MRS Logística. The use is currently for the transport of ore and cargo. The Rede Mineira de Viação was extinguished in the region during the 1960s and, currently, where the railway passed, there are houses, leaving almost nothing of what was once the Rede Mineira, only its old railway stations, its former warehouse and its old iron bridge over the Paraíba do Sul River, today only on the road.

Until 1996, CBTU operated the Barrinha Line that connected Japeri and Barra do Piraí and passed through the stations: Mário Belo, Engenheiro Gurgel, Palmeira da Serra, Paulo de Frontin, Humberto Antunes, Mendes, Martins Costa, Morsing and Santana da Barra.
