🇨🇱 Panulcillo, Coquimbo Region, Chile. Panulcillo is a hamlet located in the commune of Ovalle, belonging to the Province of Limarí in Chile.
History The exploitation of the Panulcillo copper deposit began between 1848 and 1850, which led to the installation of homes for mine workers in the lower sectors of the homonymous ravine; this caused the town to also be called "Panulcillo Bajo".
In 1868, a railway branch was inaugurated that connected the town with the Higueritas station, and therefore with the rest of the railway network that would later form the Northern Longituden; given this situation, a train station was installed in the town.
Around 1899, Francisco Solano Asta-Buruaga and Cienfuegos described in the town a population of 2,415 inhabitants, in addition to the presence of a school, post office and telegraphs, establishments of the copper foundry of Panulcillo and the railway station.
After the gradual closure of the mining deposits located nearby, the population of Panulcillo began to decrease. Of the 544 inhabitants it owned in 1907, these decreased to 324 in 1920, 152 in 1930 and 76 in 1952.
