Orimattila, Päijänne Tavastia Region, Finland


🇫🇮 Orimattila is a town and municipality in the Päijänne Tavastia region, Finland. It is located 22 km (14 mi) south of Lahti and 93 km (58 mi) north of Helsinki.

The municipality covers an area of 814.01 square km (314.29 sq mi) of which 28.87 km² (11.15 sq mi) is water. The population density is 20.14 inhabitants per square kilometre (52.2/sq mi). The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

The subject of the coat of arms of Orimattila, "a stallion horse carrying a scythe", refers to both the name of the municipality and local agriculture. The name itself comes from a house called Orhimattila, hosted by Henrich Mattzsson Orhimattila, which was already written in a 1573 book of judgment. The coat of arms was designed by Ahti Hammar and approved by the Orimattila Municipal Council at its meeting on September 15, 1956. The Ministry of the Interior approved the use of the coat of arms on December 17 of the same year.

The municipality of Artjärvi was consolidated with Orimattila on 1 January 2011.

Orimattila has a population of over 15,814 people. Orimattila also forms part of the wider Päijänne Tavastia region which has a population of over 199,604 people. Orimattila is situated 22 km south of Lahti.
