🇹🇷 Ergene is a planned district and second level municipality in Tekirdağ Province, Turkey. According to Law act no 6360, all Turkish provinces with a population more than 750,000, will be a metropolitan municipality and the districts within the metropolitan municipalities will be second level municipalities. The law also creates new districts within the provinces in addition to present districts. These changes will be effective by the local elections in 2014.

Thus after 2014 a part of the Çorlu district will be issued from Çorlu and will be declared a district named Ergene. (Ergene refers to a river with the same name which is a tributary of Meriç)

Rural area There were 3 towns and 10 villages in the rural area of the district. Now their official status became "neighborhood of Ergene".

Geography Ergene district is built on a flat land. Its area is 418 km². In the north of the district, it is surrounded by Lüleburgaz district of Kırklareli and Saray district of Tekirdağ, Kapaklı and Çerkezköy districts in the east, Süleymanpaşa and Muratlı districts in the west, and Çorlu district in the south.

It is located in the interior and the continental climate prevails. That's why summers are dry and hot, and winters are rainy and cold. It is located in the region with the least rainfall in Thrace.

The Ergene river, which is a tributary of the Meriç River, passes through the district. This river is used in the irrigation of agricultural areas. Other important streams passing through the district are Pınarbaşı, Esece and Ahımehmet streams.

Economy At the borders of the district are the European Free Zone, Ergene Organized Industrial Zone 1 Ergene Organized Industrial Zone 2 and Velimeşe Organized Industrial Zone. It contributes to most of the economy due to the presence of OIZs. In addition, wheat, sunflower and canola cultivations in agricultural lands play an active role in the economy.

Transport The D-100 State Highway and E80 Tem Highway, which connect Turkey to Europe, pass within the boundaries of the district, and there are connection roads from Velimeşe District and Ahimehmet District to E80 Tem Oto road. At the same time, the Istanbul-Edirne High Speed Train Project passes near the district.

Ergene has a population of over 62,458 people. Ergene also forms one of the centres of the wider Tekirdağ Province which has a population of over 1,081,065 people.
