🇦🇷 Tandil is the main city of the Tandil partido (department), located in Argentina, in the south-east of Buenos Aires Province, just north-northwest of Tandilia hills. The city was founded in 1823 and its name originates from the Piedra Movediza ("Moving Stone") which fell in 1912.
1Geography Tandil is located 180 metres (590 ft) above sea level. The city borders Rauch and Azul (to the north), Ayacucho and Balcarce (to the east), Lobería, Necochea and Benito Juárez (to the south) and Azul and Benito Juárez (to the west).
Tandil is situated approximately midway between La Plata (the provincial capital), 330 km (210 mi) to its NE, and Bahía Blanca, lying the same distance to its SW; it is also 160 km (99 mi) NW of Mar del Plata, and 360 km (220 mi) SSW of Buenos Aires. Tandil is in a zone within the Pampas known as the Humid Pampas.
The total area of the Tandil partido is 4,935 km² (1,905 sq mi).
1History The town was founded by Martín Rodríguez on April 4, 1823, named Fuerte Independencia (Fort Independence). In time the original natives became assimilated and mingled with the increasing European population. The vast majority of immigrants came from Spain and Italy, but also Danish people settled mainly guided by the Danish College of Missions, the latter constituting a very active community. Tandil was designated a city (although by modern standards it was a large town) in 1895 and became a popular tourist destination attracting people from Buenos Aires and other parts of Argentina.
The Piedra Movediza fell in 1912 and split in two below. Although it is impossible after the fact to ascertain the reason it fell, it is very possible that the delicately balanced rock was thrown off balance by the common practice of placing glass bottles under it and watching them explode. This was the way the locals would prove to visitors that the rock, in fact, moved, since the movement was too subtle to be detected by the naked eye. There have been projects to restore the rock, and a replica stone was placed where the original used to be. Other similar stones like El Centinela are also attractions, but none has the truly astonishing quality of teetering ever so slowly like the "moving rock" once did.
1National University of Central Buenos Aires Province The National University of Central Buenos Aires Province (Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia Buenos Aires) is a public university located in Tandil. It was founded in 1974 as part of University of Buenos Aires Professor Alberto Taquini's plan to geographically diversify Argentina's National University system.
Established with the unification of a private school and a campus of the National University of the South, with more than 11,000 students, the university includes 10 schools offering 21 undergraduate, 58 graduate, and 19 post-graduate degrees. It maintains secondary campuses in Azul and Olavarría.
1Economy The economy of the city of Tandil is characterized by being one of the most diversified in the country. The versatility and variety of industries ranging from agriculture, commerce, industry, tourism, to the knowledge industry (Software production). The city also has an important real estate market.
Improving other towns and cities of the humid pampas due to its location in the subregion called "sea and mountains", the basis of Tandil's economy is located in the intensive agriculture of wheat, soybeans (since the mid-1970s), corn and sunflower, and to a lesser extent oats, birdseed and flax. Livestock in the Tandilense area is intensive: vaccine (mainly for milking), sheep and pigs. In this way, there are more than one hundred and fifty-two (lacticinios). Tandil has a large production of regional artisanal products, such as its cheeses, salames (which has a designation of origin), salamines and other enembutidos, which are the most outstanding in the area.
1Agriculture and livestock The current importance of Tandil as a first-class agricultural centre dates back practically to the founding years. Between 1850-1860, the arrival of the first foreign settlers who began the development of agriculture was recorded. Other neighbors and immigrants of different nationalities joined this activity, to the point that around 1980 there were already more than 4,000 hectares cultivated in the party. The Chapaleofú Party, such the primitive name of the payment, in its three decades of existence, had become an important supplier of livestock to different parts of the province. Localities such as Azul, Bahía Blanca, Carmen de Patagones and even the city of Buenos Aires itself were supplied with cattle from Tandil.
1Commercial activity Commercial activities have been gravitating since the mid-nineteenth century. Large warehouses of general branches of yesteryear were installed, such as those of the town of Gardey and La Pampa Florida, the latter in force until the early 1970s.
On January 2, 1872, Tandil had the first official bank, when the branch of the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires was inaugurated. In 1892, the branch of the Banco de la Nación Argentina was installed. On November 17, 1902, the Commercial Bank of the Tandil opened its doors, thanks to the initiative of a group of merchants, industrialists and producers, a financial institution that lasted until 1995 the closure with that name, continued with other owners with the name of Mercobank until 2001 when the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic closed it, currently its building was purchased by a construction company that
Other bases of the Tandilense economy are a thriving metal-mechanical industrial production, for the important agricultural-livestock sector. Mining is also exploited, with quarrying activity in the mountains, although there are currently environmental groups that are trying to stop this activity, to avoid damage to the natural landscape.
The stone industry gained great importance both for the extraction volumes and for the number of people who came to live in Tandil from the feverish activity of the quarries, from the end of the nineteenth century until well into the twentieth. The arrival of the railway in Tandil, in 1883, was a decisive factor for the beginning of the great development of this activity. Important public works such as the cobblestone of numerous streets in Buenos Aires and the construction of the port of Buenos Aires and Puerto Belgrano, the military base in Bahía Blanca, are some examples of stone realizations of the local mountains. Between three thousand and four thousand five hundred people played in the Tandil quarries. Currently there are very few workers in that activity but the amount of extraction is important, due to technological advances in the realization of the blasting.
Currently, the city is a commercial epicenter for the entire region, especially for neighboring parties. It has two important open-air shopping centers: one in the historic centre of the city, and another in the Villa Italia neighborhood, in addition to smaller developments on Avenida Brasil and Darragueira Street. It has branches of the main banks, supermarket chains and hypermarkets, and retail chains in the country.
In the centre of the city, an important Shopping Center is being built that will have 70 shopping premises, more than 10 gastronomic stores, 4 cinema rooms and 3 parking floors.
1Industrial and artisanal products Tandil's metallurgical industry is highly developed. It has dozens of industrial establishments where everything from agricultural machinery to auto parts is made.
The dairy industry has always been important and significant production figures were already recorded in the last century. The first cream shop was installed in 1897 with the birth of the dairy company La Tandilera. Its facilities were acquired by La Serenísima although not for manufacture but for storage. In any case, there is currently a very important revival of the dairy industry, based on the importance that the Mar y Sierras Dairy Basin has acquired, both in quantity and quality.
The leather, slaughterhouse, wool, clothing of all kinds and knife factories have given and continue to give full life to the industrial activities of Tanzania. Tandil has the first monument to salami in the world. This salami, made of iron, went on tour throughout the country, before its final installation, to promote the local production of sausages.41 In the Diagonal Arturo Illia of Parque Independencia, the Artisan Fair has been held for a few years, where you can buy handicrafts from all over the country and the Flavor Fair where local manufacturers of food products exhibit and market their products.
1Knowledge Industry The city of Tandil is an important epicenter for national and international software production companies, technology and biotechnology companies in general. This is mainly due to the quality of the graduates of the Faculty of Exact Sciences of UNICEN, where a variety of very important undergraduate and postgraduate careers are taught, related to the technology and computer industry.
It has an important consortium that brings together more than 60 technology companies, known as the Chamber of Companies of the Tandil Computer Pole (CEPIT), in partnership with the Municipality of Tandil and UNICEN. Among the companies are Globant, ASSA Group, Dokko, Software del Centro, Spark Digital, Tivit, REDIMEC, Q4 Tech, Technysis, among others, stand out.
It is estimated that the industry employs about 3,300 people, between direct and indirect jobs in the city, with important sources of income.
There is also a large consortium of companies dedicated to biotechnology, nuclearized in the Tandil Biotechnology Consortium. Among the companies, the following stand out: Biotécnicas Argentina S.A., Genética Pampeana S.A., Inbio-Highway, Apilab S.R.L., Laboratorio Biológico de Tandil S.R.L., among others.
1Tourist Industry On January 10, 1943, the Monument to Calvary, Via Crucis and Santa Scala was inaugurated. These new works included the Great Cross, La Piedad and the Descent. Among hundreds of eucalyptus, olive trees and pine trees stand these original sculptures of the artists: José Fioravanti, Carlos de la Cárcova, Horacio Cerantonio, Santiago Berna, Pedro Tenti, Roberto J. Capurro, César Sfoza, Ernesto Soto Avendaño and Ricardo Musso. Thus, an expression of the most representative of Argentine sculpture was inaugurated. In January 1947, the chapel of Santa Gemma opened its doors, while in 1960 a reproduction of the cave of the Virgin of Lourdes did the same.
The scenes of redemption originated in 1948, through an initiative of the Ministry of the Directorate of Tourism of the Province of Buenos Aires represented by Ricardo Seritti. It was constantly growing until it reached its current state. Monsignor Dr. Luis J. were pioneers. Actis and the theater directors Enrique Ferrarese and Jorge Lester.
One of the biggest curiosities for visitors is the length of the streets, which in the centre of the city are longer. This is because the "stick" was initially used to measure lengths. The rod is an old measure that is equivalent to 83.5905 centimeters. The first blocks of Tandil measured 150 rods, which is equivalent to approximately 130 m. This also meant that the land is 6.6 m in front (10 rods). Then, over time, the new measures were adopted, so the new apples were no more than 100 rods.
Under the city of Tandil there are a series of tunnels that the ancient inhabitants had built to escape the stalking of the malons. These tunnels are approximately 150 years old.
In 1946, the Military Aeronautical Detachment began operating in Tandil. In that same year the College of Scribes was created, a year later the El Centinela Insurance Company was inaugurated and in 1948 the Model Clinic and also the Dental Circle.
At present, Tandil ceased to be a seasonal or Easter tourist destination, to become a year-round destination, with a strong mark on long weekends, especially on long holidays. The city is very popular both in mid-seasons, as well as in summer and winter.
The supply of restaurants, cafes, bars, fast food and breweries has been considerably expanded in recent years. With a varied range of regional, international food and from different countries and flavors. The main chain breweries decided to open in Tandil, given the marked tourist movement, in addition to the large young public that the city has. However, the favorites of tourists are still the restaurants of snacks and regional food.
1Hospitality In the field of hospitality, Tandil was always distinguished by the quantity and quality of its establishments.
The Hotel de la Piedra Movediza was the first to be founded in 1865.
Between the last years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, hotels such as El Pasajero, France, Maritorena, Manantial, Laberinto, Sierras, Edén, Ramírez, Kaikú, Argentino, etc. were successfully developed and worked.
The Palace Hotel, for a little more than half a century, was the distinguished place of Tandil. It was inaugurated on December 20, 1919 and was built by the Santamarina family. The works began in 1913. In 1971, the Palace was bought by the University of Tandil, at that time a private institution, which is currently the headquarters of the Rectorate of the National University of the Center of the Province of Buenos Aires. Since the 1990s, there has been strong growth linked to tourism.
1Tandil has a population of over 116,900 people. Tandil also forms the centre of the wider Tandil District which has a population of over 150,000 people.
