History The first expeditions in the territory that correspond to the current municipality resulted from the colonization in the area of the Jaguaripe River, carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries. The first pioneers in the region were D. Pero Carneiro and D. Álvaro da Costa, who joined the Indians of Pedra Branca, who initially inhabited the region, in expeditions through the place. The fertile lands, the valuable hardwoods and abundance of river resources, were relevant factors for the settlement of this locality. Over time, the first sugarcane plantations began with the establishment of small mills and mowing for agricultural activity, which had as its main source of exploitation the cultivation of cassava.

At that time, in the days of 1663, through the Royal Charter, it had already been recommended, to the Relation of Bahia, protection of the indigenous people and delimitation of reserve of a square league of land, so that the settlement and sustenance of the foresters could be made. The best known indigenous people were those of the Village of Santo Antônio. After the donation of sesmarias and its consequent division, in 1644, there is the record of the oldest limits that would give rise to the current municipality of Santo Antônio de Jesus, although it does not cover it at all.

In the 18th century there were already a large number of flour farmers, which had become the main economy of the place, among which stood out the names of Father Mateus Vieira de Azevedo and the farmers and merchants Antônio de Souza Andrade, João Borges de Escobar, José Ferreira de S. Paio and Bento Pereira. Father Mateus Vieira de Azevedo is one of the figures who stood out the most in the process of exploring the municipality of Santo Antônio de Jesus. His residence, in the vicinity of the Sururu River, was transformed into the first village of the municipality, where the oratory consecrated to Santo Antônio de Jesus was erected. On September 23, 1777, the oratory was transformed into a Chapel, and on June 19, 1852, it was elevated to the category of Mother Church.
