Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on the banks of the Mekong River near the border with Thailand. Due to economic growth in recent times, is now the economic center of Laos.

Sufficiency level cities are cities that have a sufficient degree of services so as not to be overly dependent on world cities.
Vientiane has a population of over 682,542 people. Vientiane also forms part of the wider Vientiane metropolitan area which has a population of over 948,477 people.
