Saint Petersburg, formerly known as Petrograd and later Leningrad, is the second-largest city in Russia. It is situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. As Russia's Imperial capital, and a historically strategic port, it is governed as a federal city.
St Petersburg has a population of over 4,880,000 people. St Petersburg also forms part of the wider Saint Petersburg metropolitan area which has a population of over 5,383,890 people.
