Retalhuleu, Guatemala
🇬🇹 The city of Retalhuleu is situated in south-western Guatemala. It is the departmental seat of Retalhuleu Department as well as the municipal seat of Retalhuleu Municipality. Retalhuleu City mixes ancient and modern architecture, and it is also known for being a commercial city.
The largest Native American group in the state is the K'iche' (Quiché) Maya people. The department contains a number of Pre-Columbian ruins, including Takalik Abaj, and it also contains numerous amusement parks, the most important and known are Xetulul and Xocomil.
Retalhuleu stands at about 240 metres above sea level. Locally it is nicknamed "Reu".
Brief history On August 7 and 8, 2021, Retalhuleu was severely affected by rain, which lasted for 36 hours and caused landslides, floods and other damages to Retalhuleu and other Guatemalan cities. (in Spanish)
Sport The local football club is Deportivo Reu which was founded in 2013 after Juventud Retalteca became defunct. Deportivo Reu play their local games at the Estadio Dr. Óscar Monterroso Izaguirre in the Primera División de Ascenso.
Municipalities The department is divided into nine municipalities: 1 Champerico; 2 El Asintal; 3 Nuevo San Carlos; 4 Retalhuleu; 5 San Andrés Villa Seca; 6 San Felipe; 7 San Martín Zapotitlán; 8 San Sebastián; 9 Santa Cruz Muluá.

Retalhuleu has a population of over 90,505 people. Retalhuleu also forms the centre of the wider Retalhuleu Department which has a population of over 326,828 people.
