It is located in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha, an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. A capital city high in the Andes, Quito is dramatically situated, squeezed between mountain peaks whose greenery is often concealed by the afternoon mist.
