Portalegre, Alentejo Region, Portugal


🇵🇹 Portalegre is a municipality in Portugal. The municipality is located by the Serra de São Mamede in the Portalegre District.

Its name comes from the Latin Portus Alacer (meaning "cheerful port"). The municipal holiday is 23 May. The city of Portalegre has two parishes (Sé and São Lourenço). These two parishes, are surrounded by eight rural parishes.

Portalegre has a population of over 24,930 people. Portalegre also forms the centre of the wider Portalegre district which has a population of over 127,018 people. It is also a part of the larger Alentejo Region.
