Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua, and the centre of an eponymous department. It is located on the south-western shore of Lake Managua in the Managua Department. The metropolitan area, includes the municipalities of Ciudad Sandino, El Crucero, Nindirí, Ticuantepe and Tipitapa.
Managua is rated Gamma by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) which evaluates and ranks the relationships between world cities in the context of globalisation. Gamma level cities are cities that link smaller economic regions into the world economy.
Managua has a population of over 1,055,247 people. Managua also forms part of the wider Managua metropolitan area which has a population of over 1,534,218 people.
