Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. Also known as Yunnan-Fu, today it is a prefecture-level city and the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province as well as the seat of the provincial government. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming. Located in the middle of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 metres above sea level. It is located at the northern edge of Dian Lake, and is surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.
Kunming is rated Gamma + by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) which evaluates and ranks the relationships between world cities in the context of globalisation. Gamma level cities are cities that link smaller economic regions into the world economy.
Kunming has a population of over 4,575,000 people. Kunming also forms part of the wider Kunming metropolitan area which has a population of over 6,626,000 people.
