Awka is the capital city of Anambra State, Nigeria. The city was declared capital in 1991, after the creation of Anambra and Enugu state. The city is located in the centre of the densely populated Igbo heartland in South East Nigeria.
Awka has a population of over 399,300 people. Awka also forms part of the wider Awka metropolitan area which has a population of over 2,500,000 people.
