Amritsar, historically also known as Rāmdāspur and colloquially as Ambarsar, is a city in the state of Punjab, in north-western India. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district and is located in the Majha region of Punjab.
Amritsar is a centre for tourism and has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India. The city is also known for its wooden chessboards and chess pieces manufacturing industry.
Amritsar has a population of over 1,132,761 people. Amritsar also forms part of the wider Amritsar metropolitan area which has a population of over 1,377,000 people.
